Trebizond: “The Tepegöz” (1885)

Magical Adventure

A storm sinks a boat and only two sailors survive and wash up on an island. Faint with hunger, they search for something to eat. They find a cave and find giant trenchers of gruel and milk and after waiting in vain for the owner to return eat and drink their fill. When the owner does show up, he is a gigantic Cyclops. He puts his sheep in the cave and learns the men's story. He blocks the cave entrance with a boulder so they cannot escape. The one tells him his name, the other claims his is No-one. The Cyclops skewers and roasts the one who gave his real name. He falls asleep with his skewer in the fire and the other man blinds him with it. The Cyclops tries to catch him, and then calls the other Cyclopes, saying that no one blinded him. The man escapes by crawling out of the cave under the belly of a huge ram. He gets to the shore and finds a ship that will take him away.

This Cyclops has the same eye on the very top of his head as does the one from Kerasounta just above. In fact, the plot and almost all details of the story are nearly identical to the version from Kerasounta, only the sub-dialect used is quite different.
